60 Degrees West & 15 Degrees North
These are the coordinates to my favorite beach. Not really they are the misalignments of my eyes. Recently I had this really cool eye appointment at the hospital. My eyes are so misaligned currently they can refract me for new glasses. My options are, surgery. I’ve had Strabismus surgery before, the most single painful incident of my life. At the time they didn’t know if you’d gone blind for about a day. That I can tell you wasn’t fun either. There was about a week of drops etc in my eyes. I will let you know how it goes this time.
I say the appointment was really cool. They do all these funky tests. There was a device that I had to try to put the dog in the dog house. I could manipulate the image both vertically or horizontally. I never did get the dog in the house. The dog would either shoot out to the left or the right.
There was another test with a green lens over one eye and a red lens over the other eye. A dot was projected that you could see through the red lens and you had a light pen that you aimed with the eye using the green lens. The point was to get the two dots to overlap. I didn’t.
Then we played with some prisms to see how out of alignment my eyes were. Well a ways. So for now no new glasses. I have to say I’m not a huge fan of carbonate lenses. I’ll be safe and stick with plastic but something a little more exotic next time.
During the appointment I didn’t get dilated. Thank god!!!! Ruins my day entirely. The other really cool thing is the technician put a temporary prism on my glasses so I can prepare for surgery and get used to what it will be like when my eyes are realigned. It was an immediate relief. I’ve felt this tension this uneasiness for the last few years, almost three and as soon as I started looking through my glasses with the prism the uneasiness whet away. Important lesson take care of you. If you think something is wrong keep asking questions until its identified. I had a good eye doctor in Seattle who told me the misalignment wasn’t enough to operate on. Next time I’m going for the second opinion as I asked for the strabismus surgery over three years ago.
I feel my PEFFS cycle was hugely negatively impacted making it so I didn’t have the energy to be effective at Microsoft. I should have stood my ground.
I’m still getting used to the prism and the closer alignment of my eyes my balanced is messed up and my judgement of distances is messed up but my brain will clue in sooner or later. It amazing what your brain can do. The temporary prism has vertical
lines so it looks like your looking through a mesh and you loose about a line on the eye chart of vision. The result have more of a stereo view more than makes up for the temporary anomalies.
The testing was very cool. The technician hypotheses that I likely never had stereoscopic vision I’m a mono mono guy and have figured out how to simulate depth perception. I can switch back and forth and view the image from each eye individually. I have a lot of other memory / mental tricks as well to see. My vision although not “stereo” is at least more mono / mono less stressful
Some of you may have heard of a surgery focused on Nystagmus. Another symptom of Ocular Albinism. Essentially the Strabismus and Nystagmus surgeries are very similar. Your eye muscles are cut and reattached to improve your vision.
I’ll keep you updated wish me luck!!!!
