Braille Business Cards

When I’m out and about I often get asked about various bits and bobs of equipment I’m using to accommodate my disability. Or I’m asked about blindness in general. I answer the persons question and point people at the “BlindManCan” blog. I’ve started handing out business cards my wife makes for me, she does a great job printing on forms and splitting them apart. It works its cool.

I’ve come to the point where I think Braille on the business cards for the “BlindManCan” blog would be cool and expand the messaging of the blog. People love braille on business cards. It gets the message of accommodation and blindness across raises awareness etc. Its all good. The other thing it does is make your business card standout. Better networking connection and conversation and funny enough you get picked more often in business card draws. I love it.
The problem is I can’t find a business card printer who is able to make business cards with Braille on them. I’m looking at getting a thousand cards. Sounds like a lot but I get that many questions in a year no problem. What I am having to do is get the cards printed then get another vendor to put braille on them. A two step process with logistics in the middle of getting the business cards from one vendor to the next. Then there is time. It will be a month for me to get cards. Ridiculous. Finally there is the cost. Say for arguments sake $200 to get the cards printed. Then there is another cost of $200 to get Braille to put on the cards. I have to pay double for my business cards to be accessible. Obscene.
Through all of this I am to say the least annoyed frustrated and embarrassed. The blind community in Canada has not stepped up to help me. I am ordering my cards from a vendor in the US who can do both the printing of the cards and put braille on them. Also the costs is significantly less.
I am trying to raise awareness of blindness and disability in a positive manner. I am trying to give hope and the very community I am trying to help is handicapping me. I am totally frustrated. This should be simpler.
