What Does a Blind Person Look Like
In the US I was recognized most of the time as a blind person. Occasionally I’d get questioned as to the stick with a wheel but most of the time people knew what was going on. In Canada, they think I’m some kind of crazy man carrying a stick with a wheel and wearing funny colored safety glasses.
You should see what happens in Canada when I’m in a group setting and start using one of my visual aids. They think the Borg have arrived and they start covering their orifices so I can’t assimilate them. In the US at least they would think I was some kind of crazy super geek. At least I was cool. In Canada I’m just crazy.
The more I’m in Canada the more I’m sure that Blind people are not to be seen. That its assumed I’ve escaped from the institution. I feel like they think I shouldn’t have a job shouldn’t have a life shouldn’t be able to participate in experiences. Just going to Costco is like taking my life in my hands never have I had to hit a cart because it was going to run over me. Never have I been run over by a cart. I’ve had both things happen in Calgary. I used to shop at the busiest Costco’s in and around Seattle and never have I had safety issues that I’ve had here. Never have I gone to a food store and had some one tell me to my face, wearing the funny safety glasses and carrying the white cane, tell me that if you can’t see it we don’t have it. Priceless but the most stupid thing I’ve ever seen.
I have never in the US had anyone kick my white cane out of the way. In Calgary, in Canada someone kick’s my white cane at least once a week. Occasionally in the US I’d get some arrogant ass cut me off or distract my dog for kicks. It happens every day in Calgary. They come running up behind you and cut right in front of you. I’m afraid I’m going to take out a sighted person with my white cane. Something I joked about in Seattle in Calgary I’m betting its inevitable.
Twice today I’ve had people ask me “what the hell is your deal?!!!”, TWICE in one day. I tell them no I’m not measuring anything with the white cane with a wheel and no these aren’t safety glasses, I’m blind. They just say Oh and turn their backs on me.
I’ve started asking so what should a blind person look like? I actually don’t think I should ask. I’m almost scared of what responses I’ll get. No one yet has answered the question though.
I get so frustrated if I was unemployed living on the street shiftless listless, selling pencils out of a tin cup I would be accepted. Being a professional with a life and love, I feel like I’m a threat.
What is a blind person supposed to look like? I have absolutely no idea!!!
