Recognition of the Canadian Womans Olympic Hockey Team

My wife and i took our car in to get serviced yesterday at the dealership. The dealer has a shuttle service to get you back home or to your office after dropping off your car with them. The driver of the shuttle was an interesting fellow who is apparently passionate about hockey. He asked us all if any of us were hockey fans. I being the only other male acknowledged an interest, for the conversation.

The shuttle driver, talked a lot about hockey and some of the great players and rivalries. I am old enough to remember most of it, yikes I’m getting old. All of this lead up to the Canadian’s woman’s hockey team and the issue of the team being recognized and added to the hockey hall of fame. My emotional reaction, my first reaction was, absolutely yes they won the gold medal at the Olympics why shouldn’t the Canadian woman’s hockey team be recognized by the hockey hall of fame. I expressed this thought to the driver of the shuttle who wasn’t satisfied with my response.
The shuttle driver continued his dialogue about hockey, then showed his true argument. The driver claims that the Canadian woman’s’ hockey team is consistently beaten by a AAA midget hockey team. Again my thought was so what, but the driver continued to clarify, the hockey hall of fame should only recognize capabilities and not achievement. I was stunned, shocked, here was this red necked middle aged white male telling me, an openly blind man, that because these players are female they shouldn’t be honoured for their achievements.
I as a person, disabled or not, am proud of all of the athletes from whatever county participated, competed, won and lost at any level of competition. Personally I feel like those that stand on the sidelines have no right to criticize those who have the passion, will, strength to put themselves out there to do things and to live.
I am totally for the Canadian woman’s team being recognized in the Hockey Hall of Fame, why wouldn’t they be is the question!!!
