AI is Discriminating

AI is Discriminatory, but its meant to be. I would argue that a big part of how our brains function works is categorization . Labeling and sorting our experiences to make sense of them.

A blind man can’t own a car. I’ve had my name on the registration for vehicles for years. The police forces where I live have moved to automation and AI for scanning license plats. No matter if your parked stopped or traveling your license plate is being scanned by a system and business rules applied.

The scanning system alerted an officer in a car on the highway and my wife and I were pulled over The AI system indicated that the car was owned by someone without a “drivers license”, me. I have a class 8 identification card. The officer wanted to be sure I wasn’t driving.

At one level I appreciate that we were pulled over, I get the business rule that people with valid licenses shouldn’t drive. The risk is a bad experience with a police officer not in a good place. To mitigate the risk I transferred ownership of the car to my wife.
